The House of Culture (Government House) is located at the far southern end of
Regent Street in downtown Belize City. This
gracious mansion was the seat of colonial government
in British Honduras and the residence of governors
appointed by Her Majesty the Queen of England.
Today Government House has been transformed
into a House of Culture, a creative community
center for residents and visitors. It serves
as a venue for art and music courses, exhibitions,
concerts, gallery spaces, meeting halls and
an open-air theatre. The lush grounds make an
inviting backdrop where weddings and other social
functions are held. Birders have discovered
that the surrounding trees and foliage attract
a variety of indigenous Belizean and migratory
birds.
The mansion has recently been refurbished and
the colonial character of the building has been
preserved. A permanent exhibit collection includes
period furniture and silver serving pieces once
used in the banquets held by the governors of
the colony.
